ESL Teachers Wanted !
Join our Evening Program.
Las Casas English as a Second Language seeks volunteer teachers and assistants for our adult ESL program. Located in the Fruitvale district of Oakland, classes run from September to May. Classes meet Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7-8:30 pm. We are looking for a commitment of at least one evening a week and can provide subs when you have an occasional conflict.
Las Casas is an all-volunteer program started in 2002. We have 5 levels of classes, Literacy
through Intermediate High. We serve a population of primarily low-income Latinos – but Spanish
is not required. Our adult students are eager, engaged, hard-working, and a delight to teach!
However, we turn students away almost nightly and always have a waitlist – more teachers help us to serve more students!
Lead Teachers, usually working in teams, design and implement lesson plans for the week, based on course outlines. Assistant teachers do not have to have experience, or create lesson plans. We provide our staff books, supplementary materials, curriculum guides, supplies, copier access and workshops. We have a great group of teachers, many experienced in ESL, but also students just out of UC Extension , USF, as well as retirees and folks just looking to make a difference!
Limited time, but a desire to contribute?
We’ll work with you!
Volunteers can help Lead teachers in many ways, while building their own skills and gaining
hands-on classroom experience. You do not have to have teaching experience, though it is helpful. We also have administrative support jobs outside the classroom working with prospective students, helping with assessment and orientation, etc. These administrative positions do not have to have a weekly commitment.

It has been a pleasure and a personally rewarding experience. I have learned and continued to develop teaching skills from working with this program. And I have personally benefited from the friendships I have formed here. Thank you for that opportunity.
